The hardcore (no joke) Word of Mouth marketing practitioners of the DC area (aka DC WOMmers) got together at Mie N Yu on March 3rd for the first ever WOM Slam event.![]()
A WOM Slam (#womslam on twitter) is a fast-paced networking/educational/business solutions event where smart people come together to learn, collaborate, and then generate Word of Mouth (WOM) marketing ideas for the “client” of the night.
Our “client” of the night was Mie N Yu (full disclosure: my client)
Over Silk Road themed drinks and appetizers, the 28 WOMmers in attendance were briefed by Mike, one of the managers, about the challenges and opportunities the restaurant faces.
For 45 minutes, in small teams of 4-5, the WOMmers were networking with each other and generating ideas that would give Mie N Yu customers a reason to tell their friends about the restaurant.
At the end, each participant had 50 seconds (yes, we had a stopwatch) to present his/her idea.
The top 10 ideas each received a copy of Word of Mouth Marketing: How Smart Companies Get People Talking” by Andy Sernovitz (thank you Andy for the donation!) and the Grand Prize (went to Joey Coleman) was dinner for 2 at Mie N Yu.

The criteria for victory?
- low-cost
- easy to implement
- give someone a reason to talk
Joining Mike and me as a judge was none other than the Catchup Lady herself, Kaitlyn Wilkins, from Ogilvy PR’s Digital Influence Group.
And thanks to a number of folks who livetweeted the event. Just added to the excitement.
We will be doing more WOM Slams in DC and other cities as well, so check out (and join) our WOM Slammers Facebook Group, follow WOM Slam on Twitter, and/or subscribe to my EventBrite RSS feed, or drop me a line by commenting here.
And, if you'd like a WOM Slam for your company, send an email to jer979 AT womslam.com
Lesson (again): Connect like-minded people who share passion for a subject and want to meet others. Then sit back and watch the magic happen. It NEVER fails.
