or Twitter followers.
Or LinkedIn network....
Produce stuff that people want to read.
Yes, it's basic. Very, very basic.
But I am shocked still to see how often I hear of 'social media consultants (how to find a fake)" who talk of their strategies for "getting you massive numbers of followers or readers" using means that I would describe as dubious.
In the short-term, they will work. No question.
You can follow 1,000 people on Twitter and 50% of them will follow you back. Presto, 500 followers.
But, do you really have a relationship with any of them?
Will they really spread the word for you? Does it help your brand equity, really?
Plus, when I look at your profile and see that you are following 2x the number of people who follow you, I start to wonder if you really have value to add.
Or, you can take the drip irrigation approach.
Slowly, building your brand.
And then, one day, you will get a note like this from Darryl.
Team, Please sign-up for this newsletter - Igniting the Revolution - for this site: http://www.jer979.com/.
This is another consulting firm that we are considering bringing in to advise on DE. He is a community, network, or social marketing consultant.
The newsletter comes out daily, but takes less than a minute to review, and gives the authors thoughts of the day on networking and social media concepts and ideas mostly through example. He refers to the “Attention Economy”.
Please start getting the email and read it daily – Everyone Please – we want to master individually, as a group of people, and a company these concepts, ideas, and methods – adapting them to our best uses.
I am humbled, honored, and excited. But it validates my approach.
So, thank you, Daryl. And thank you to all of you who spread the word as well.

Excellent post Jer. It's got to start with having something to say. There are techniques (or so the smart people tell me) for getting your thoughts out there. But first you've got to have thoughts. And I feel that too often folks get so excited by the shiny new tools of the internet that they forget not to b stupid and vapid.
Thanks for helping us stay grounded Jer.
