There are a number of ways in which you can assess the strength and value of your network.

Raw numbers, how influential your connections are, and others.

One thing to look at is, like your stock portfolio (in theory, pre-crash) is how diversified are you?

The more diverse your network connections are (and how well you nurture them, of course), the more likely you are to hear about new opportunities or to find the "synergies" of connecting the dots between two people and helping them become successful.

This is a constellation-like visual of my Facebook network (particularly appropriate as we become more and more screen literate, according to Kevin Kelly).

I like it because it shows me, at least, that I have a few different, highly connected networks.

Just remember: Don't be like Jason and wait until you need it to cultivate your network.
