A Fine Line...

May 29, 2008

One of Johnny Bunko's rules is that Persistence Trumps Talent.

There's a fine line, however, between persistence and annoyance/irritation.

Let's say you tell me, "hey, Jeremy, I'm interested in hiring you for WOM/Social media strategy work."

Great, that's what I'm in the business of doing...and typically, it's a hurry up and wait.

No problem, I get how big corporations work (remember I worked in one for 6 years.)

Now, the challenge is, you don't want to be forgotten (who does), but you don't want to be pesky (who does).

My approach: call up the potential client and say:

'I need your guidance. I know there's a fine line between persistence and annoyance. Can you give me advice on what the appropriate interval is for checking in with you?"

Most people are ok with the occasional reminder, I've found.

So, the business lesson: when you talk to YOUR customers...have you asked THEM what the appropriate interval for communication is?

Or do you just decide it yourself?

Have you crossed that line?

How do you know?

Useful post. The kind of respectful approach you suggest here makes a lot of sense. I am in the same boat you are, and I don't want to annoy , but I also want to stay fresh in their mind.
